Commonwealth Mastering

Austin Gordon
Hi, I'm Austin - owner of and principal mastering engineer at Commonwealth Mastering.

To say that I love music is quite an understatement, I’m obsessed with it. I found my favorite bands on Myspace back in the late 2000’s, went to my first shows, and started a journey that I’m still on now. If you can name a role within the music industry, I’ve probably done it – singer-songwriter, frontman, bassist, recording and mixing engineer, music publication writer, booking and box office manager, to name a few.

After graduating with my degree in Commercial Music and Audio Engineering, I spent the better part of my 20’s trying to figure out where it was in music that made the most sense for me. I always knew that it was in audio, but with the ever-changing landscape of studios and commercial records, it was hard to see where I fit into that.

Then one day, I discovered my love and respect for mastering when listening to records alone on my headphones. In those quiet and constructive moments, I realized what I adored about music and ultimately appreciated the most about it was the overall experience, and how it hits you when there’s nothing between you and the speakers. I can only describe it as magic. From that point forward, I poured my energy into understanding mastering as best I could so that I could turn around and give that back to the music in the same way.

I realized that this is where I need to be – and with that clarity, the understanding that any work that I did needed to be in service to not only the art but also the people that make it. My approach from the beginning has always been to put the people first because if you do that, everything else will follow.

When I am not mastering, in my free time I still make and release music under my own name (which you can find here), and am an outspoken advocate for progressive action, whether it be through congressional or civic reform, unions, or labor rights. I am also an associate member of the Audio Engineering Society, and I love cycling, coffee, hiking, traveling, and hanging out with my partner and our two cats – O’Malley and Kitten.

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to being with you on your artistic journey. Let’s create a partnership.
